URBANA, Ill. - Senior Meagan Halliwill and red-shirt junior Kyle Strotbaum kicked off action for the Spartans in day one of the 2008 Big Ten Outdoor Track & Field Championships, both scoring in the hammer throw at the Illinois Soccer and Track Stadium on Friday afternoon. Halliwill put six points on the board for the green and white, after coming in third with a regional-qualifying launch of 55.67m (182-8). After beginning the day seeded No. 11, Strotbaum pulled out a seventh-place finish with a toss of 56.32m (184-9), his second-best throw of the season.

"Anytime you come into a big meet like this, you ask the kids to finish above or where they were seeded at the start," said Assistant Coach John Newell. "Kyle came in ranked 11th and finished seventh, and Meagan came in third and finished third. So anytime they do that and score points for the team you have to mark it as a success."

Sophomore Becky McCormack chipped in for MSU in the 10,000m run, placing eighth with a time of 35:46.68 and scoring one point.

Currently, the Michigan State men sit in eighth place with two points, while the women are in sixth place with seven points.

Day two of action picks up tomorrow morning with the 110m hurdles decathlon at 10:30 a.m. ET. The first Spartan to compete will be freshman Kris Amos in the high jump at 2:15 p.m. ET.
