Neitzel, Wulff Announced as MSU's Big Ten Sportsmanship Award Winners

Michigan State University graduates Drew Neitzel and Alisa Wulff were recognized as Big Ten Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners, announced by the conference office on Wednesday. The Spartan pair were among the 22 Big Ten student-athletes, one male and one female selection per school, who were chosen from a group of 275 student-athletes honored throughout the academic year.

Courtney Schiffauer Named Ohio Basketball Coaches Association Division I Player of the Year

Incoming Spartan freshman Courtney Schiffauer was recently named the OHSBCA (Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association) Division I Player of the Year. Schiffauer, a second-team all-state selection by the Associated Press, averaged 21 points and 10 rebounds in leading Boardman High School to the state semifinals and a 19-8 record.

Spartans Draw Georgia Tech in ACC/Big Ten Women's Challenge

The Michigan State women's basketball team will face Georgia Tech in Atlanta, Ga., on Wednesday, Dec. 3 in the second annual ACC/Big Ten Women's Challenge. It will mark the first-ever series meeting between the two schools. The Spartans won their inaugural game in the challenge last year with a 68-51 victory over Clemson in the Breslin Center.

The 2007-08 Michigan State women's basketball team - the youngest in the Big Ten - earned a postseason bid for the seventh straight year, advanced to the championship game of the WNIT, and tied for the fourth-winningest season (23 victories) in program history. The Spartans collected their fifth straight 20-win season against one of the toughest schedules in the country, and won 10 conference games for the sixth straight season. Allyssa DeHaan set a Big Ten single-season record with 150 blocked shots and was named a first-team All-Big Ten selection by the media.

Women's Basketball Adds to Signing Class, Inks Taylor Johnson to National Letter of Intent

Michigan State women's basketball head coach Suzy Merchant announced Thursday the signing of Taylor Johnson (Lakewood, Colo./Highlands Ranch High School) to a National Letter of Intent. Johnson joins Porschè Poole (Canton, Ohio/McKinley High School) and Courtney Schiffauer (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman High School), who signed NLIs in the fall. All three signees will be eligible to play for the Spartans beginning in the 2008-09 season.

Michigan State fell to Marquette, 81-66, in the WNIT championship game Saturday afternoon before a crowd of 7,818 at the Breslin Center. Kalisha Keane led all scorers with a career-high 24 points, while Mia Johnson and Allyssa DeHaan each scored 11. MSU finishes the season with a 23-14 record.

Spartans to Play for WNIT Title Saturday Against Marquette

The Michigan State women's basketball team will look for its first-ever WNIT title as it hosts the 2008 championship game against Marquette Saturday at 4 p.m. in the Breslin Center. The Spartans defeated Bowling Green, Kansas, Michigan and North Carolina State en route to the final game of the 48-team tournament, while the Golden Eagles beat Creighton, Illinois, Kentucky and Colorado. The game, which marks just the second meeting between the two schools, will be televised on the CBS College Sports Network (formerly CSTV).

The Michigan State women's basketball team will look for its fourth straight victory Wednesday night as it hosts North Carolina State in the WNIT semifinals at 7 p.m. in the Breslin Center. The 48-team field of the WNIT is down to four, as Marquette plays at Colorado in the other semifinal. The WNIT championship game is set for Saturday, April 5 at 4 p.m. Fans can listen to the game locally on WJIM 1240 AM.

Michigan State and Michigan will meet for the third time this season on Sunday as the Spartans host the Wolverines in the WNIT quarterfinals. The two teams split the season series, with each team protecting its home court. Tip time is scheduled for 2 p.m. in the Breslin Center. The winner will earn a trip to the WNIT semifinals to take on the winner of St. John's-North Carolina State, which is also scheduled for Sunday.

Women's Basketball Defeats Kansas, Advances to WNIT Quarterfinals to Face Michigan

The Michigan State women's basketball team defeated Kansas, 58-54, in the third round of the WNIT Thursday night at the Breslin Center. The Spartans (21-13) advance to the WNIT quarterfinals to take on Michigan Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Breslin Center. Allyssa DeHaan led MSU with 16 points and also collected seven rebounds and four blocks. In the game, DeHaan scored her 900th career point and grabbed her 500th career rebound.

Women's Basketball Takes on Kansas Thursday Night in WNIT Third Round

The Michigan State women's basketball team defeated Bowling Green in the second round of the WNIT last Saturday at the Breslin Center, 74-66, and will host Kansas (17-15) in the third round Thursday night at 7 p.m. Kansas, who also received a first-round bye in the 48-team tournament, beat Evansville in the second round on Monday in Lawrence, Kan., 82-60. This will be the first-ever meeting between the two schools. Fans locally can listen to the game on WJIM 1240 AM.
