Women's Cross Country Places 13th at Pre-NCAA Meet

EAST LANSING, Mich. - In a race that featured 17 teams ranked in the FinishLynx NCAA Division I Women's Cross Country National Poll, the 17th-ranked Michigan State women's cross country team finished 13th at the Pre-NCAA Meet in Bloomington, Ind., with 407 team points. No.1-ranked Stanford won the 5,000 meter race with 77 points. Among the teams the Spartans finished ahead of were No. 12 Notre Dame (22nd place), No. 14 Missouri (18th place), No. 15 Arizona (19th place), No. 23 Northern Arizona (15th place and No. 24 Florida (33rd place).
Earning top-Spartan honors was freshman Cindy Durocher (Parry Sound, Ont.) who placed 38th at 18:03.68. Also placing in the top 50 was sophomore Ann Somerville (Ironwood, Mich.) whose time of 18:09.70 placed her 48th. Leah Nilsson (Williamston, Mich., 88th), Jen Denkins (Flushing, Mich., 98th) and Sarah Parbel (Caledonia, Mich., 150th) also scored for the Spartans.
The Pre-NCAA meet was held on the Indiana University Cross Country Course, which will also serve as host for the 1999 NCAA Cross Country Championships. The Spartans will return to action on Fri., Oct. 22 at the EMU Open. The Big Ten Championships will be held Saturday, Oct. 30 at State College, Pa.
