EAST LANSING, Mich.- The Michigan State women's crew began the 1999-2000 season on Oct. 2 at the Head of the Ohio in Pittsburgh, Pa.
"We are exactly where we want to be. We've been knocking on the door for the past two years, but now we are ready to be in the room with the big guys," said MSU head coach Bebe Bryans.
During the women?s pair competition, five Spartan combinations competed in the field of eight. The MSU pair of juniors Amie Elvie (Hudsonville, Mich.) and Nicole DeMott (Rogers, Minn.) placed second.
MSU?s Open 8 finished fourth out of 25 with a time of 13:19.8, one spot ahead of last season?s fifth-place finish. Each member of the Open 8 rowed in at least two races during the regatta.
The Spartan?s top Open 4 boat finished third out of 25 with a time of 16:21. The Open 4 saw the conditions change from 65-70 degrees and flat in the morning, to rough and windy during its race in the afternoon.
The Spartans are back in action on Saturday, Oct. 16 when they return home for the Head of the Grand, at Grand River Park in Lansing.
