Baseball Blasts Indiana Tech

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State baseball team used sixteen hits to defeat Indiana Tech 13-6 on Sunday afternoon at Kobs Field in East Lansing. Ted Demetral (Sterling Heights, Mich.) led the Spartan attack, going 4-5 with four runs and two RBI. Scott Colvin (Chelsea, Mich.) was 3-4 with 3 RBI and a home run in only his second start of the season. On the season, Michigan State improves to 24-15 while Indiana Tech drops to 41-13.
Michigan State took control of the game early, scoring 10 runs in the first four innings to take a 10-2 lead. The Spartans scored first with two runs in the first inning. Mike Wagner (Cincinnati, Ohio) led off the game by reaching on an error by th3e Warrior shortstop. Wagner would then steal second and score on a Carlos Fernandez (East Lansing, Mich.) single. Fernandez would later score on a fielder's choice.
In the Spartan second, Joe Albaugh (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) led off the inning with a triple to center field. Demetral would single to score Albaugh. After Colvin was hit by a pitch, Wagner singled to score Demetral. Fernandez followed with a sacrifice fly scoring Colvin.
Demetral and Colvin would team up in the third to produce another run. With two outs, Demetral singled and stole second. Colvin would single to drive in Demetral.
In the fourth, Kyle Geswein (Dayton, Ohio) singled to score Fernandez. Albaugh would then drive in Geswein with a double. Demetral followed with a RBI single and would later score on a wild pitch.
The Spartans would seal the victory in the seventh inning. Leading 10-4, they would add three more runs. Colvin would do most of the damage, hitting a two-run home run to left center field. A Tom Hartley (White Lake, Mich.) RBI single would wrap up the Spartan scoring.
Geswein improved to 2-0 on the season by pitching four innings, allowing two hits and striking out four Warrior batters. He allowed two runs, one of them earned. Eric Koenig (4-2) took the loss for Indiana Tech.
Michigan State will return to action on Tuesday afternoon when it hosts Western Michigan at Kobs Field at 1 p..m. Next weekend the Spartans will face Michigan in a four game series. Friday's game will be at Kobs Field at 3 p.m. Saturday the two teams will meet in Ann Arbor for a 1 p.m. doubleheader. On Sunday, the series will return to Kobs Field for a 1 p.m. contest.
