EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State baseball squad rebounded from a 17-0 pounding to Louisiana Tech on Saturday, with a 14-9 victory over Indiana State on Sunday afternoon at the Lake Area Classic in Lake Charles, La. The Spartans improved to 2-1 behind three hit efforts from right fielder Tom Hartley (White Lake, Mich.) and catcher Joe Kalczynski (Farmington, Mich.). Kalczynski also added four RBI as the Spartans were able to outscore the Sycamores, who fall to 1-5 on the season.
Michigan State, who was held scoreless on Saturday, wasted little time getting on the board Sunday, scoring two first inning runs. With two outs, Mike Wagner (Cincinnati, Ohio) reached on an error and stole second before scoring on a Hartley double. Kalczynski followed with a RBI single.
The Sycamores would score three in the next two innings to take a 3-2 lead, but the Spartans responded in their half of the third. With two outs and two men on base, Gary Zsigo (Lennon, Mich.) singled to center, scoring Wagner. After an Indiana State error allowed the rally to continue, freshman Troy Bergman (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) singled down the left field line scoring two. Ted Demetral (Sterling Heights, Mich.) would add a two-run single of his own as the Spartans scored five runs in the inning.
Once again, however, the Sycamores would mount a comeback, tieing the score at seven after five innings. Just as they had earlier in the game, the Spartans would answer the challenge with their offense, scoring four runs in the next two innings. Kalczynski drove in two of the runs with a sacrifice fly in the sixth and a single in the seventh. Leading 11-7 entering the ninth, Michigan State would extend its lead by three runs on another Kalczynski single and a Joe Albaugh (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) two-run single.
Kimya Massey (Okemos, Mich.) picked up his first win of the season, pitching four scoreless innings in relief. He allowed two hits and two walks while striking out two Sycamore hitters.
The Spartans will next travel to Boca Raton, Fla., on Mar. 6 for their spring trip, where they will play eight games over a nine day span.
