Baseball Wins Fifth Straight Against Iona

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State baseball squad captured its fifth straight victory with a 3-2 win over Iona College on Sunday morning in Boca Raton, Fla. The Spartans were led by strong pitching and some timely hitting. With the win MSU improves to 8-3 on the season after completing a 6-2 spring trip in Florida.
John Steiger (Webberville, Mich.) started the contest, pitching five innings and allowing only one run. Kimya Massey (Okemos, Mich.) and Jon Huizinga (Wayland, Mich.) provided 3 2/3 innings of relief, giving up one run on three hits. Chris Yens (Mayville, Mich.) came in to record the last out in the top of the ninth and earn his first victory of the year.
With the game even at one, Michigan State would take the lead in the fifth on a solo home run by freshman Kyle Geswein (Dayton, Ohio), the first of his collegiate career. Iona would even the score at two in the eighth.
The game would remain tied until the bottom of the ninth. Mike Pisani (Rochester, Mich.) led off the inning with a home run to left center, his second of the year. Pisani's round-tripper extended his hitting streak to eight games while giving MSU its fifth one run victory of the year.
The Spartans will travel to Muncie, Ind. on Mar. 19-21 to take on Ball State.
