East Lansing, Mich. - The Michigan State field hockey team dropped a 2-1 decision to Northwestern today at Spartan Stadium. The game, which ended in a 1-1 tie following double overtime, was decided on strokes. Officials inadvertently ended the game during the second series of strokes with Northwestern leading, 3-2. MSU has officially protested the contest because only three of the five strokes allowed were taken during the second series.
Two 15-minute sudden victory overtime sessions are played if a game ends in a tie. If neither team scores during the extra sessions, the contest is decided using strokes. Each team takes five strokes in the first session and the squad converting the most strokes is declared the winner. If each team converts the same amount of strokes another series of five strokes are taken. If the teams tie again, a third series of strokes are taken in a sudden death format.
During regulation, Northwestern took a 1-0 lead when Lisa Comrie scored with 15:38 left in the first half. The Spartans tied the contest in the second half with 20:55 left when senior Deirdre McLinden scored her first goal of the season on a pass from freshman Erin Mulhern.
The Spartans had an opportunity to win the game late in the second half, but Wildcat goalkeeper Jess Yates stopped freshman Marleen Tuip's penalty stroke attempt.
MSU is 8-11 overall and 4-6 in the Big Ten, while Northwestern improves to 7-12 overall and 2-8 in the Big Ten. MSU will host the 1998 Big Ten Tournament next weekend at Spartan Stadium (Nov. 6-8). Regardless of the outcome of today's protest, the Spartans are the No. 4 seed in the tournament and will face fifth-seeded Iowa at 11 a.m., on Nov. 6.
