EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Former Michigan State hockey captain Tyler Harlton (Pense, Sask.) has been named a recipient of a $5,000 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. Harlton, who graduated this May, is one of 36 men in sports other than football and basketball awarded a scholarship.
A three-time captain of the Spartans and a second-team All-American this season, Harlton posted a 3.75 grade-point average in political theory and constitutional democracy in MSUs James Madison College. He was the first player ever to be named the CCHAs Best Defensive Defenseman two years in a row, and was a first-team GTE Academic All-America selection this year.
The $5,000 scholarship is good for postgraduate study at the university or professional school of Harltons choice. He must begin use of the award by the year 2003. Recently signed by the NHLs St. Louis Blues, Harlton will pursue a professional hockey career in the immediate future, but does plan to go back to school, possibly for a business or law degree.
