The top Spartan entry in the novice eight competition placed first out of 18 with a time of 17:13.6. MSU's second boat came in fourth (17:53.6) behind two Wisconsin boats. MSU assistant coach Matt Weise was pleased with the novice showing, saying,
"We got off to a good start. We learned a little about competition and performed very well."
MSU head coach Bebe Bryans was also excited with the performance of the team, but added, "We are still looking for better speed in the eights, but our performance in the fours and pairs was strong, showing we have the capability. We just need to show a little more character in the eights and go after it a little better."
The Spartans return to competition on Sat., Oct. 17 and Sun., Oct. 18, at the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, Mass.
