EAST LANSING, Mich. - It is finally over. No, the Big Ten season is just starting, but MSUs seven match road trip has finally come to an end. Michigan State traveled to Wisconsin and Iowa over the weekend to open Big Ten play, and in the process played their sixth and seventh consecutive games in a row on the road.
On Saturday the Michigan State mens tennis team began the Big Ten season with a 5-2 victory over Wisconsin. The Badgers began the match by winning the doubles point as Wisconsin won all three doubles matches. The Spartans just proved to be too strong come singles play, as they took five of the six seeds to gain the victory. MSU improved to 5-7 after the victory and 1-0 in the Big Ten.
On Sunday things started off the same way for the Spartans. Iowa took the opening point in doubles by winning two of the three matches. Unfortunately for MSU, things didnt end in the same fashion as Saturday. Michigan State was only able to take two of the six singles matches to lose by a final score of 5-2. Chris Struck (Okemos, Mich.) won at No. 4 singles in straight sets to complete a perfect weekend. Francisco Trinidad (Mexico City, Mexico) picked up the other point for the Spartans against Iowa at No. 5 singles.
The loss to Iowa brought Michigan States record back down to 5-8 and 1-1 in the Big Ten. MSU now opens a three match home stand in Big Ten play. The Spartans will host Penn State and Ohio State on Saturday April 3 and Sunday April 4 at 1:00 pm,.and Michigan on April 7 at 6:00 pm.
