ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The ninth-ranked Michigan State men's gymnastics team defeated No. 6 Michigan on Thursday night in Ann Arbor, 229.475-229.150. Michigan's season-high score was not enough to beat MSU's school-record mark. It was the third time in the last five meets that the Spartans have raised the all-time mark. State set season highs on the pommel horse (38.350), the still rings (38.425), the vault (38.800) and the high bar (38.200).
Brady Grimm, Ethan Sterk and Mike Phipps (Battle Creek, Mich.) each won events to lead the Spartans to victory. Grimm tied the school vault record of 9.800 to win the event and also set career highs on the pommel horse (9.550)and parallel bars (9.400). Sterk's 9.650 on the horse won the event while he also tied a career high on the still rings (9.550). Phipps (9.800) tied his rings career high, while Ryan Trumpinski shattered his previous career best on the vault (9.700) to tie for second. Mike Quarress also set a career mark on the parallel bars with a 9.500 while rookies Tommy Housley (rings and p-bars) and Chris Weedon (rings) both improved their career marks. Housley's mark of 9.700 was good for second place on the floor exercise.
This meet was the first of three consecutive weekends in which the Spartans and Wolverines will match up. On March 20-21, the teams will meet at the Big Ten Championships in Ann Arbor followed by a dual meet scheduled for March 28 in Jenison Field House. A fourth and even fifth-straight meeting is possible if both teams advance to the NCAA Regionals and then on to the NCAA Championships.
