Spartan Gymnasts Douse Flames

EAST LANSING, Mich. - No. 5 Michigan State cruised past the No. 10 Flames of Illinois-Chicago by winning 227.025-222.100 on Saturday night in Jenison Field House.
"I'm so proud of these guys," said Spartan coach Rick Atkinson. "They just keep getting better and better. There are two reasons why we are so much better this season compared to previous years: We have more talent and our guys know how to compete. I think we can get to 230 (as a final score in a meet)." That is quite a statement considering the school record for a meet score is 229.475, set by last year's squad.
The high score of the evening was Tommy Housely's 9.775 in floor exercise. Ken Baker also had a successful night, winning the pommel horse (9.700), the parallel bars (9.650), and the high bar (9.750), as Dave Barron matched Baker's 9.700 on the pommel horse.
Chris Weedon and Mike Phipps placed second on still rings, both scoring 9.650, while Dave Ruiz took second on vault with a 9.500.
The Spartans will take a week off before returning to action to face the Iowa Hawkeyes in Iowa City on February 19.
