Spartan Women's Gymnastics Signs Five

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State University has received the national letters of intent for five womens gymnasts for the 1999-2000 school year it was announced by the athletic department on Wednesday, Nov. 11.
"We are excited about this new group of student-athletes," said Michigan State head coach Kathie Klages. "This recruiting class brings Michigan State five highly qualified, hard-working individuals. They are all strong all-arounders who will complement the current individuals on the team. We look forward to their arrival in the fall and their eventual impact on Spartan gymnastics."
Lindsay Trainham, a 5-7 incoming freshman from Briarcliff, N.Y., will graduate from Good Counsel Academy in the spring. She trains with Frank and Laurie DeFrancesco at Arena Gymnastics in Stamford, Conn. A two-time USAG Region 7 and state champion, Lindsay has qualified for USAG nationals for the last five straight years.
Diana Crea, a 4-10 incoming freshman from Beaver Falls, Pa., will be a 1999 graduate of Blackhawk High School. She trains with Frank Klein at X-Cel Gymnastics in Cranberry, Pa. A two-time level 10 Pennsylvania state champion, Diana scored a 37.650 to win the all-around in 97. She was a 1998 USAG Region 7 national qualifier.
Christy Linder, a 5-3 1999 freshman-to-be from Fremont, Ohio will graduate in the spring from Fremont Ross High School where she maintains a 3.8 GPA. She trains with Tim Price at Tumble City in Perrysburg, Ohio. Christy placed fifth at the USAG Regional competition and is the current AAU National all-around champion. She was a USAG Region 5 national qualifier.
Maurella Wells, a 5-3 incoming freshman from Elmhurst, Pa., will graduate in the spring from North Pocono High School. She trains with Omar Egas at Keystone Gymnastics. An alternate for the 1998 USAG nationals, Maurella scored a 9.300 on vault and a 9.625 on floor at the USAG Regionals.
Julie Devaty, a 5-2 freshman-to-be from North Olmsted, Ohio currently maintains a 3.9 GPA and will graduate from Magnificat High School. She trains with Joe Gura at Great Lakes Gymnastics in Avon Lake, Ohio. Julie has been a USAG Region 5 National Qualifier for three of the last four years. She also competes for Magnificat HS which has won three consecutive state championships. In 1996, Julie received the John Nagy Award from the AAU, awarded to the top female athlete in Ohio.
