Spartans Find Success at Season Opening Tournament

EAST LANSIN, Mich. - Senior Mark Jacobson (Roswell, Ga) and junior Francisco Trinidad (Mexico City, Mexico) opened the fall season for the Michigan State mens tennis team by capturing the doubles championship in their flight of the Ball State University Fall Classic. The duo coasted through their opening match dropping just one game and advanced to the semifinals after their opponents defaulted because of injury. Jacobson and Trinidad captured their flight by beating Mohamed Dakki and Pekka Mikkonen from Western Michigan 8-6. Jacobson also had the most success for the Spartans in singles action as he captured the consolation bracket in his singles-flight. Michigan State also received excellent support from the doubles team of Mark Findling (Livonia, Mich) and Todd Kosta (Ann Arbor, Mich) as they played into the semifinal round in their flights consolation bracket. Junior Ken Kigongo (Bradenton, Fla) also reached the semifinal round in his consolation bracket for singles play. Rounding out singles action for MSU was Francisco Trinidad (0-2), Todd Kosta (1-1), Mark Findling (0-2), junior Navneet Narula 1-1, and freshman Sean Lasko 2-2 (Toronto, Canada). In doubles play the tandems of Kigongo/Struck went (1-1), Findling/Kosta (1-2), and Lasko/Narula (0-1). Overall, the Spartans went 10-11 in singles action and 6-4 in doubles. The Spartans return to action next Friday through Sunday at the Western Michigan Invitational in Kalamazoo, Mich.
