EAST LANSING, Mich - Unfortunately for the Spartans, the home courts didnt result in much of an advantage. The MSU mens tennis team, playing its first home matches of the fall season, ended up splitting six of the matches it played finishing three and three.
Michigan State was selected as the host school for the 1998 ITA Region IV Championships. The Championships date back to 1981 and had been known as the Rolex Regional Championships for the past 15 years. Close to 100 men were entered in singles play, while 48 doubles teams competed from the regions 32 schools.
Fridays matches were the first of the four-day championships. Action continues throughout the weekend, concluding with singles semifinals action on Monday morning and followed by the singles and doubles championship matches.
The doubles teams of Trey Eubanks/Chris Struck and Ken Kigongo/Francisco Trinidad both received a bye in the first round for MSU and open action Saturday for the Spartans.
No team scores are kept at the ITA Region IV Championships. It is the final play of the fall season for Michigan State. Their next round of competition will be at Madison, Wis., for the Big Ten Indoor Championships on January 16-18.
