Women's Cross Country Sixth at Regional Championships

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's cross country squad finished sixth at the Great Lakes Regional Championships in Terre Haute, Indiana, with a team total score of 187. The University of Wisconsin and the University of Michigan finished first and second with team scores of 39 and 53, respectively.
The University of Michigan's Katie McGregor won the Regional Championships with a time of 17:02, 14 seconds better than her winning finish at the Big Ten Championship in Ann Arbor on November 1st. The top Spartan finisher was junior Leah Nilsson (Williamston, Mich.) placing 25th with a time of 18:21. Her season best time of 17:54 came at the Michigan Intercollegiates on October 9, 1998. The other Spartans to finish in the top 50 included Jen Denkins (Flushing, Mich.), Ann Somerville (Ironwood, Mich.), and Sarah Parbel (Caledonia, Mich.). Denkins finished with a time of 18:29, one second off her time at the Big Ten Championships (18:30).
At last years Great Lakes Regional Championships, Michigan State finished in 10th place with a team total score of 301. This year's sixth place finish is Michigan State's best since they placed fifth in 1994.
