EAST LANSING-Winning Saturday's tournament by more than a three-point margin, the Michigan State women's gymnastics team captured first place at the Hobie's Invitational en route to setting a new all-time school record (195.850).
The meet, hosted by MSU at Jenison Fieldhouse, saw New Hampshire clinch second place with a 192.550, Eastern Michigan take third with a 189.375, Bowling Green conclude with a 188.575.
The 19th-ranked Spartans posted the top score and top gymnasts in every event, breaking the uneven bars school record with a 49.450. Every MSU competitor in that event broke season highs, while four set career bests.
Junior Erin Mullen boasted top honors in all-around with a 38.675, setting a career high for herself on bars (9.900). Grabbing two medals, Carolyn Hecht achieved highs for herself on bars and balance beam (both 9.925), the latter good for a tie with teammate Jamie Elwell for the all-time school record. Senior captain Briony Lecky and sophomore Polly Kiker tied for first place on floor exercise with a 9.875. Freshman Elizabeth Forshier highlighted the night of spectacular performances with a 9.900 on vault, a perfect score for the difficulty on that apparatus.
Also setting career highs: Becky Robinson on bars (9.850), Kiker on bars (9.875) and beam (9.825), and Chrissy Weathersby on bars (9.850). The Spartans travel next to Nebraska for the Master Invitational, Saturday, February 28, at 7 p.m.
