Field Hockey Wins Midwest Regional Indoor Tournament

Muncie, Ind. - The Michigan State field hockey posted an 8-1 record to win the USFHA Midwest Regional Indoor Championship over the weekend in Muncie, Ind. As the regional champions, the Spartans qualify to compete in the USFHA Indoor Championships, March 28-29, in Downingtown, Pa.
During offseason indoor competition, each team plays six to a side in two 12-minute periods. Results do not count towards regular-season standings or records and are considered exhibition contests for collegiate teams.
Freshman Marleen Tuip paced the Spartans and was the tournament's high scorer with 22 goals and 10 assists over the weekend. Rookie Sanne van Nouhuys added 15 goals and seven assists, while sophomore Debbie White contributed 14 assists.
As a team, MSU outscored its opponents, 48-7.
In the regional championship game, the Spartans blanked Iowa, 3-0. Van Nouhuys scored the game-winning goal.
The Spartans split their squad for the tournament and the MSU II team placed sixth in the tournament with a 4-2-1 record.
