East Lansing, Mich. - Iowa and Ohio State won first-round games today at Spartan Stadium to advance to Saturday's semifinals of the 1998 Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament. The fifth-seeded Hawkeyes snapped a three-game losing streak to Michigan State (8-12 overall) with a 3-1 victory in the opening game of the tournament and will face top-seeded Penn State tomorrow at 11 a.m. The third-seeded Buckeyes pulled out a 1-0 win over Northwestern and will take on the second-seeded Michigan Wolverines tomorrow at 2 p.m.
Iowa took an early lead on the Spartans when freshman back Tiffany Fodera beat Amy Ortwein just four minutes and 54 seconds into the contest. MSU rookie Bridget Cooper, the 1998 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, tied the game at the 20:02 mark with an unassisted goal.
Senior Quan Nim intercepted an MSU pass in the circle and blasted a shot past Ortwein to give Iowa a 2-1 lead with 13:06 left in the half. The Spartans couldn't solve Iowa keeper Lisa Cellucci in the second half, while their only scoring opportunity was waved off. Sophomore Natalie Dawson's goal at the 22:17 mark of the second half sealed the victory for Hawkeyes, who improved to 10-9 overall.
"We didn't plan on this outcome," said MSU coach Michele Madison. "We gave it our best shot and we have to live with that. It was a good matchup because both teams go after it. We all had opportunities to score at various times throughout the game.
"The called back goal was unfortunate because at the time we had a lot of momentum going. That pushed us back a little, but we kept fighting."
"Obviously, I'm very pleased with the outcome," Hawkeye coach Beth Beglin said. "Michigan State is a tough team to play, especially on their home field. It's extremely difficult to beat a team three times in a season and I felt that was something we had in our favor."
In today's second game, OSU freshman Marije van Nouhuys tipped a Camilla Robinson shot into the net early in the second half for the only score of the game.
Buckeye goalie Ana Schwartz stopped six Wildcat shots to collect her sixth shutout of the season to help OSU snap a three-game losing streak and improve to 12-7 overall.
"Our defense played solid, they really stepped up to the challenge and played disciplined on their marks," Buckeye coach Anne Wilkinson said. "Individually, they knew what their responsibility was and so collectively we were really able to keep it together back there."
Saturday's action begins at 11 a.m., with top-seeded Penn State taking on Iowa, while the second-seeded Wolverines play Ohio State at 2 p.m. The championship game is set for 1 p.m. on Sunday.
