Men's Golf Finishes in 19th Despite Third-Round 298

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State's third-round score of 298 moved the Spartans out of last place, but MSU still finished 19th out of 20 teams at the Marshall Invitational in Huntington, W.V. The Spartans followed Friday scores of 320-314 with a 298 for a total of 932 at the Guyan Golf and Country Club. Northwestern won the tournament with 298-294-292=884.
The Spartans battled through heavy winds and rain on Friday which caused a delay of one hour and 15 minutes between the first two rounds. Saturday's third round featured overcast and cool conditions. Michigan State's Saturday score of 298 was among the top 10 team rounds of the day.
The Spartans were paced by senior Matt Pumford (Saginaw), whose 77-76-77=230 was good for a share of 51st place individually. Freshman Nathan Clark of Mason, Mich., made his second career appearance for the Spartans and fired a career-best 74 on Saturday, finishing in a tie for 83rd at 83-79-74=236.
Michigan State returns to action April 17-18 at the Kepler Invitational in Columbus, Ohio.
