EAST LANSING, Mich.-- Michigan State womens tennis team opened the 1998-99 season with the annual Spartan Classic on Sept. 25-27, at the MSU outdoor tennis courts. The Spartan Classic included MSU, Bowling Green, and Eastern Michigan. Competition was divided into a round robin of three singles and two doubles flights. The Spartans feature an experienced lineup this year, with all six starters returning from last year, when MSU compiled a 10-11 overall record.
On the final day of competition, MSU sophomore Natasha Skogerboe defeated EMUs Aino Kalervo, 6-2, 6-4, to remain undefeated on the season. In addition to her excellent play in singles, the duo of Skogerboe and junior Brooke Townsend won its second straight doubles match after defeating EMUs Agnieszka Niemczyk and Manuela Todorova, 8-3. Skogerboe and Townsend defeated BGSUs Beth Wilson and Tiffany LaSusa on Sat., 8-2. Also netting its second doubles victory of the classic was the MSU tandem of seniors Isabell Oelze and Brooke West, who defeated EMUs Jean Kansuthi and Simone Duhme, 9-7.
The Spartans will return to competition on Oct. 23-25 at the Old Dominion Invitational in Norfolk, VA.
