EAST LANSING, Mich - Michigan State women's tennis team opened the 1998-99 season after kicking off the annual Spartan Classic on Sept. 25, at the MSU outdoor tennis courts. The Spartan Classic included MSU, Bowling Green, and Eastern Michigan. Competition was divided into three singles and two doubles flights, with one round of singles and doubles played on Friday. The Spartans feature an experienced lineup this year, with all six starters returning from last year, when MSU compiled a 10-11 overall record.
MSU Senior Brooke West, who controlled No. 1 singles last season, led the Spartans in the A-flight. West defeated BGSU's Meghan Rhodes in a come-from-behind victory, 0-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4. Also starting off the season with a victory was MSU sophomore Natasha Skogerboe, who defeated BGSU's Deidre Bissinger, 6-3, 7-6 (5), in the B-flight. Skogerboe was 14-17 last year, holding down the No.2 position as a freshman.
The Spartan Classic will continue on Sat. and Sun., Sept. 26-27, at the MSU outdoor tennis courts. Competition will begin at 10 a.m., and in the case of bad weather, the event will be held at the MSU indoor tennis facility.
