EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State's Mike Chappell (Southfield) has been chosen as the school's representative on the 1999 Big Ten Men's Basketball Foreign Tour Team. The Big Ten squad will compete against teams in Austria over a 10-day period in early August.
Chappell, a 6-foot-9, 205-pounder, was redshirted during the 1998-99 season following his transfer from Duke University. As a sophomore with the Blue Devils in '97-98, he averaged 7.0 points, 2.0 rebounds and 14.3 minutes per outing. A starter in 21 of Duke's 36 games that year, he paced the squad in three-point shooting (.434) and scored in double figures on 13 occasions. He will enter the 1999-2000 season with junior eligibility at MSU.
"Having Mike play on the Big Ten team will benefit him for the upcoming season," said MSU head coach Tom Izzo. "Getting him re-acquainted with the conditions and situations he'll face in a game setting will help sharpen his skills."
Wisconsin head coach Dick Bennett will be at the helm of this year's Big Ten Foreign Tour Team. The team will gather in Madison for training camp from August 2-5 before departing on its excursion.
Big Ten men's teams have posted a 68-27 record in the nine years of the foreign tour while playing in such places as Japan, France, Italy, Finland, the Netherlands and Germany.
