EAST LANSING, Mich. - After being the 12th-ranked doubles team in the nation, seniors Ken Kigongo and Francisco Trinidad had high hopes going into the T. Rowe Price National Intercollegiate Clay Court Championships. Unfortunately for the duo, they head back to East Lansing still in search of their first win of the season.
Kigongo and Trinidad ended up losing their opening round match of the tournament to the unseeded team of Josh Goffi and Darrin Knight of Clemson, 6-3, 6-3. The Spartans were seeded No. 4. The Championships are a single elimination tournament. The MSU doubles team received an automatic berth into the main draw by virtue of their national ranking.
The most prestigious tournament of the year, the T. Rowe Price National Clay Court Championships consists of a 32-team doubles draw. The addition of the T. Rowe Price National Clay Court Championships to the ITA?s national tournament calendar in 1986 completed the collegiate grand slam. Following the clay court championships are the ITA/Reebok Men?s All-American Championships, Rolex National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships and the NCAA Championships. Similar to its professional counterpart, the ITA Collegiate Grand Slam is played on three different surfaces: clay, hardcourt and indoor - for both men and women.
Following this weekend?s action, Michigan State will travel to Charlottesville, Va, to face the University of Virginia on September 27. MSU has its first home action of the season October 15-17 when it hosts the Advantage Spartan Invitational. The Spartans will also be the host school for this year?s Big Ten Indoor Championships on January 15-17.
