East Lansing, Mich. - Michigan State University Director of Athletics Clarence Underwood has named Tim Bauer women's tennis coach. Bauer, who began his duties at MSU on Friday, Jan. 7, replaces Heather Mactaggart who resigned last summer to become the full-time director of the MSU Tennis Facility.
Bauer takes over the Spartan program after spending the previous three seasons as an assistant coach at Florida State. Bauer was instrumental in helping head coach Lise Gregory take the Lady Seminoles from a national ranking of No. 50 when they arrived to a No. 19 ranking in 1998-99. FSU posted a 21-7 overall record that year, the best season in 20 years for the Lady Seminoles.
?We are excited about Tim Bauer becoming a member of the Spartan family,? MSU Director of Athletics Clarence Underwood said. ?He has a wide variety of experiences and talents that we feel will help lead our women?s tennis program to new heights.?
The 28-year-old Bauer is a 1993 graduate of Furman where he was a member of four Southern Conference Championship teams. A three-time Academic All-Southern Conference selection, he earned a degree in health and exercise science from the school.
?Michigan State has a lot of potential and I'm looking forward to setting a new standard and raising the level of expectations for this program,? Bauer said. ?Coming in midway through the season creates some unusual challenges, but my goal is still to raise the bar and to bring MSU tennis to national prominence.
?The Big Ten and MSU are very well respected,? Bauer added. ?The facilities here, both indoor and outdoor, are phenomenal and that is an important factor in recruiting and in becoming successful.?
A native of Long Island, N.Y., Bauer did his post-graduate work at Florida where he earned a master's degree in exercise and sport science in 1995. While at Florida, Bauer was a sport science instructor in the College of Health and Human Performance.
Since 1992, Bauer has been a professional tennis coach, working with players on the ATP and WTA tours. His work in the professional ranks has taken him to such Grand Slam events as Wimbledon, the French Open and five U.S. Opens.
Bauer continues to be active in coaching elite juniors as well as coaching at USTA Area Training Centers for the USTA's top ranked juniors. He has also served as a professional coach and consultant to several pro players formerly ranked in the top 100, including WTA players Patricia Hy-Boulais (Canadian No. 1, WTA No. 28), Katarzyna Nowak (Polish No. 1, WTA No. 65), Li Fang (Chinese No. 1, WTA No. 35) and Grant Stafford (ATP No. 78).
Bauer's expertise in sports science and sports psychology make him a highly sought after speaker on such topics as Eastern bloc sport science, elite athletic performance and talent detection and training. He also consults with elite amateur and professional athletes in other sports on performance issues concerning sport psychology and exercise physiology.
