Men's Gymnastics Takes Sixth in Opening Meet of Season

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Spartan men?s gymnastics team placed sixth in the Windy City Invitational scoring a total of 218.800. The team had its best finish out of all the events in the vault with a score of 37.050, tying for third with Ohio State.
Ohio State won the invitational with a total team score of 225.725 with Jamie Natalie winning the all-around with a score of 56.375. The Buckeye?s notched four individual first place finishes in vault, horizontal bar, pommel horse and all-around.
Dave Ruiz (So., Oviedo, Fla.) placed 16th on the floor exercise with a 9.500 and was sixth on the horizontal bar with a 9.550. Sophomore Jon Plante (Easton, Pa.) notched a seventh-place finish on the pommel horse with a 9.300 and took fifth on the parallel bars with a 9.450. Troy Takagishi (Sr., East Lansing, Mich.) tied for 13th on the still rings with a score of 9.300. Freshman Brad Golden (Orlando, Fla.) was the highest-placing Spartan in the meet, tying for third on the vault with a 9.450. Golden and Jamie Shepard (Fr., Dayton, Oh.) were the only two Spartans to compete in all six events, with Golden scoring a 54.000 and Shepard notched a 53.600.
The Spartans next action will be at home on Saturday, January 22 against Ohio State at 7 p.m.
