No. 11 Wrestling Falls To No. 1 Iowa, 22-13

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The No. 11 Michigan State wrestling team lost to No. 1 Iowa, 22-13, Sunday afternoon at Jenison Field House. The Spartans fall to 6-2-1 overall this season, 2-1-1 in the Big Ten, while the Hawkeyes improve to 13-0, 4-0.
No. 1-ranked Doug Schwab gave Iowa an early 5-0 lead with a technical fall at 141 pounds. Freshman Karl Nadolsky (Holland, Mich.) answered with a 6-3 win over Josh Budke at 149 to make the score 5-3, but Iowa went ahead 9-3 after No. 1 T.J. Williams scored a major decision at 157.
MSU then won the next two matches to tie the score at nine apiece. 14th-ranked senior Greg DeGrand (Saline, Mich.) got a 2-1 sudden-death overtime win against Matt Anderson and No. 19 Will Hill (Indianapolis, Ind.) took a 7-6 decision from No. 10 Gabe McMahon to pull MSU even.
Iowa answered with a Paul Jenn major decision at 184 to go ahead 13-9, but top-ranked senior Nick Muzashvili (Unadilla, N.Y.) countered with the final Spartan victory, a 10-2 major decision over No. 7 Lee Weber at 190 pounds. The win improves Muzashvili's record to 22-0 overall and 5-0 in the Big Ten.
Iowa then got consecutive decisions from No. 3 Wes Hand (HWT), No. 2 Jody Strittmatter (125) and No. 1 Eric Juergens (133) to push the final score to 22-13. The nine-point margin of victory is the smallest for Iowa this season.
The Spartans take to the road next weekend for a pair of conference duals against Northwestern and No. 6 Illinois. They take on the Wildcats Feb. 3 at 7:30 p.m. and face the Fighting Illini Feb. 6 at 1 p.m. Michigan State will then host the National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Star Meet on Feb. 7 at 7:30 p.m. in Jenison Field House. Third-ranked 133-pounder Pat McNamara (Jordan, Minn.) and No. 1 Muzashvili will represent MSU in the meet.
