EAST LANSING, MICH. - Michigan State's junior cross country runner Ann Somerville was named the Big Ten Athlete of the Week for October 10th. She cruised to a 21:14 clocking at the Paul Short Invitational in Bethlehem, Pa. last Saturday placing third out of a 231-runner field. Her finish helped the team to a fourth-place finish out of 34 teams.
Somerville has raced to the second fastest time in the Big Ten in both the 6K and 5K races. Her 17:20 in the 5K is second to 1999 NCAA cross country champion Wisconsin's Erica Palmer. Somerville has finished in the top ten in all three races she has competed in, including a first-place finish at the Spartan Invitational and a seventh-place at the Great American XC Festival.
