EAST LANSING, Mich. - Through the first three games of the season, Michigan State's power play struggled to find its niche. Tonight, the Spartan power play returned to the form that made it one of the nation's best last season.
MSU scored three power-play goals as the Spartans (2-1-1/1-1-0 Central Collegiate Hockey Association) downed Nebraska-Omaha (2-2-0/1-1-0 CCHA) by a 4-1 score in front of 6,503 at Munn Ice Arena. With the win, the Spartans salvage a series split with the Mavericks.
"I was proud of the way our guys bounced back," said MSU head coach Ron Mason. "For one reason or another this season, we've been going up and down the ice giving up quality scoring chances whereas tonight we limited those chances.."
The Spartans scored the lone goal of the opening frame when Rustyn Dolyny (Thunder Bay, Ont.) inexplicably batted a rebound through a scrum in front of the goalmouth and past UNO netminder Dan Ellis. John-Michael Liles (Zionsville, Ind.) doubled the MSU lead with a power-play goal of his own at 4:48 of the second period. The Mavericks' David Brisson pulled his team to within 2-1 when he scored a power-play tally off a rebound of a Greg Zanon shot at 7:34 of the middle stanza.
MSU scored its third man-advantage tally of the night when freshman Jeremy Jackson (Los Angeles, Calif.) converted on a pretty feed from Adam Hall (Kalamazoo, Mich.) with 4:19 left in regulation. Hall scored an empty-net goal to provide the final margin of victory.
The Spartans return to action Oct. 26-27, when they travel to Notre Dame to face the Fighting Irish in the lone regular-season meetings between the two teams this season.
