EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's basketball team held its Green-White Intrasquad Scrimmage on Saturday, Oct. 28 with the White squad taking a 92-87 victory before approximately 11,000 fans in the Breslin Center.
"I was pleased with the unselfishness our team displayed today," said head coach Tom Izzo. "We did a lot of team stuff that really impressed me. The number of turnovers, however, was a negative.
"I thought every guy had great moments today. You could see where some guys had really improved. A lot of guys did things today that will help our team win games this year."
Among the most impressive performances today was senior forward Andre Hutson, who turned in a 27-point, seven-rebound effort while splitting time between the Green and White teams. Freshman center Zach Randolph scored 25 points and grabbed seven rebounds, playing most of his minutes on the Green squad. Senior wingman Mike Chappell tallied 24 points on eight-of-12 shooting. Redshirt freshman Adam Wolfe also turned in a 21-point performance to go with seven rebounds.
Sophomore Jason Richardson thrilled the crowd with several dunks en route to 18 points. He also displayed his improved overall game with seven rebounds, including five offensive, eight assists and hard-nosed defense.
"I just wanted to go out and play hard today," said Richardson. "By doing that I hope to get my teammates to play hard too. It was a very competitive on the floor today and very tiring. We didn't have many subs, but we went hard at each other. I think we can all take some good things out of today's game."
Senior Charlie Bell was on the receiving end of several of Richardson's assists. He scored 16 points and added eight assists. Senior Brandon Smith also tallied eight assists. Sophomore Aloysius Anagonye grabbed eight rebounds, seven offensive, to go along with his 14 points.
"We only played 12 guys today so the play was sloppy at times," said Charlie Bell. "But I think we showed signs of how good we can be. We did a lot of good things today like pushing the ball on the fast break, finding the open men and knocking down our open shots."
Michigan State's unselfish play was highlighted by 48 combined assists on the teams' 71 field goals.
Michigan State's next action will be Tuesday, Nov. 7 when the Spartans host Northern Michigan in the first exhibition game of the season. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
With over a week until the next game, Bell wants his team to take advantage of the practice time to get better as a squad.
"We have to stay mentally focused," explained Bell. "That can be hard without any games to break up the practices. But we realize that every practice is important if we are going to improve as a team."
