Cross Country Freshman Earns Big Ten Honors

EAST LANSING, MICH. - Michigan State freshman Steve Padgett (Cincinnati, Ohio) was the only rookie to crack the top ten at the Big Ten Cross Country Championships, earning Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors. His sixth-place finish earned All-Big Ten First-Team honors.
Padgett is the Spartans first male runner to be named Big Ten Freshman of the Year since Anthony Hamm was a co-honoree in 1987. The top ten finish for Padgett was his fourth of the season and his time of 24:26 was a career-best.
Team champion Wisconsin's Jason Yanderhoof was named the men's Big Ten Cross Country Athlete of the Year, while runner-up Indiana's coach Robert Chapman was marked as the men's Big Ten Coach of the Year.
