Women's Golf Captures Pine Needles Invitational Title

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. - Behind a record-setting performance by the Michigan State women's golf team, the Spartans captured the team title at the Pine Needles Invitational on Wednesday (Nov. 8).
MSU shot a school-record 288 en route to earning the tournament title. The 288 breaks the previous best mark of 290, set at the 2000 Big Ten Championship and the Big Ten/Big 12 Shootout in 1999.
"I am really excited about how we finished the fall season," said MSU Head Coach Stacy Slobodnik. "After struggling early in the tournament, it was nice way to end the fall season and to see the results of our efforts."
Michigan State (307-295-288=890) finished three strokes ahead of second-place South Florida (301-294-298=893) and 13 strokes ahead of third-place Kentucky (299-300-304=903). It was MSU's first tournament title of the season and the 72nd in the program's history.
MSU placed four golfers in the top 11 led by junior Stacy Snider (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grandville HS) who placed third after shooting a final round of 71. Snider carded a 218 for the tournament (74-73-71), two strokes behind the leaders Fany Schaeffer of South Florida (71-73-72=216) and Laura Torrisi of Campbell (73-71-72=216). Schaeffer was the playoff winner and won the individual tournament title.
Emily Bastel (Upper Sandusky, Ohio/Upper Sandusky) finished tied for fifth, after shooting 220 (75-72-73) in the three-day event, while senior Kasey Gant (Fort Wayne, Ind./Bishop Dwenger) was tied for 11th with a 224 (79-74-71).
Other Spartan finishers include: freshman Sarah Martin (Grosse Ile, Mich./Grosse Ile HS), who carded a 228 (79-76-73) over the three-day event to finish tied for 24th and redshirt freshman Allison Fouch (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids HS), who tied for 47th. Fouch finished the tournament shooting a 243 (79-83-81).
The Spartans will kick off the spring season Feb. 12-14, when the travel to the TRW Regional Challenge in Los Angeles, California.
