EAST LANSING, Mich. - UNLV handed MSU its second loss of the season Saturday in the 20th Annual UNLV/Coors Desert Invitational by a score of 10-4. The loss drops MSU to 1-2 on the season, while UNLV improves to 5-11.
After surrendering a run in the top of the first inning, MSU responded with three runs in the bottom of the third inning to go up 3-1. Igniting the Spartans three-run explosion were sophomore second baseman Don Watchowski (Shelby Twp., Mich.), left fielder Joe Albaugh (Sr., Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) and center fielder Bob Malek (Fr., Detroit, Mich.), who each hit consecutive doubles.
Following a 1-2-3 inning in the fourth by Spartan starting pitcher Jon Huizinga (So., Wayland, Mich.), MSU tacked on another run to stake a 4-1 lead following first baseman Kyle Geswein's (So., Dayton, Ohio) second home run of the season.
MSU's lead, however, would be short-lived. UNLV roughed up Huizinga for four runs in the sixth inning, giving the Rebels a 5-4 lead. The Rebels responded again with four runs in the eighth inning, this time off Spartan reliever Ryan Golem (Fr., Dearborn, Mich.), giving them a commanding 10-4 lead, which was how the game would end.
The Spartans will not have time to dwell on Saturday's loss, as they will conclude play in the invitational with a doubleheader Sunday against Nevada-Reno at 10:00 a.m. PST and Santa Clara at 5:00 p.m. PST.
