BOCA RATON, Fla. - Michigan State's baseball squad dropped its eighth game of the season Thursday night on the campus of Florida Atlantic University 10-3 to the Cardinals of Ball State University. With the loss the Spartans record falls to 2-8, while Ball State's improves to 3-6.
In the beginning, the game was dominated by each squad's starting pitchers. Ball State's Bryan Bullington held MSU to just one run in seven innings, while MSU's Scott Brandell (Sr., Lansing, Mich.) held the Cardinals to just one run through the game's fist four innings.
The Cardinals opened up the scoring with the game's first run in the top of the second inning off of a solo homerun by first baseman Matt Wood. MSU answered though in its half of the second with a run of its own when sophomore shortstop Kevin Crews (Hinckley, Ohio) hit a sacrifice fly to left field, which scored sophomore infielder Don Watchowski (Shelby Township, Mich.) to tie the game at 1-1.
The tie would not last for long, however. In the fifth inning Ball State broke the one all tie by scoring one run off of third baseman Paul Henry's RBI single, which gave the Cardinals a 2-1 lead. Ball State quickly increased its lead to 4-1 by scoring two more runs in the sixth and four more in eighth, which made the score 8-1 in favor of the Cardinals.
MSU, however, would not quit. The Spartans came back and scored two runs of their own in their half of the eighth. Watchowski knocked in senior right fielder Mike Pisani (Rochester, Mich.) with a sacrifice fly and freshman catcher Brady Burrill (Newhall, Calif.) made the score 8-3 following his RBI single to left field which scored first baseman Kyle Geswein (So., Dayton, Ohio).
8-3 would be as close as it would get for the Spartans, though, as Ball State came back in the top of the ninth to score two runs and closed out the game's scoring in the process - making the final 10-3 in favor of Ball State.
