BOCA RATON, Fla. - Michigan State's baseball squad falls to 2-9 on the season following a 4-2 loss to the Gaels of Iona College on the Campus of Lynn University Friday afternoon in Boca Raton, Fla. Iona improves to 4-0 on the season following its victory.
The game began as a pitching dual between MSU starter Gary Zsigo (Sr., Lennon, Mich.) and Iona starter John Novinsky. Through the game's first three innings Zsigo and Novinsky combined to allow no runs and only five hits.
In the fourth, though, things began to get offensive. Iona initiated then game's scoring by two runs in its half of the fourth to take a 2-0. MSU cut the lead to 2-1 in its half of the fourth when senior outfielder Joe Albaugh (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) came around to score.
In the fifth Iona increased its lead to 3-1 by tacking on another run its half of the inning. The Spartans also came back to score another run in the fifth after freshman outfielder Brett Wattles (Rochester, Mich.) drew a walk to bring home senior outfielder Mike Pisani (Rochester, Mich.), making the score 3-2 in favor of Iona.
Pisani's run, however, would be the last run the Spartans would score of the game. Iona, though, would tack on one more run in the seventh inning.
The Spartans will get another crack at Iona on Saturday when they will play a 10:00 a.m. at Municipal Stadium in Pompano Beach, Fla.
