Men's Golf Finishes 16th At Birkdale Collegiate Classic

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State's men's golf team shot 305 and 312 in windy conditions in the final two rounds on Sunday to finish in 16th place out of 18 teams at the Birkdale Collegiate Classic in Huntersville, N.C. The Spartans shot a three-round total of 308-305-312=925 at the 7,013-yard, par-72 Birkdale Golf Club, while Virginia Commonwealth captured the team title with a three-round score of 873.
Sophomore Nathan Clark (Mason, Mich.) was the top Spartan finisher, earning a tie for 22nd at 76-75-73=224. Junior Dennis Riedel (St. Clair, Mich.) slipped in the final round after shooting three-over-par in the first two rounds, finishing in a tie for 47th at 73-74-84=231. Senior Carlos Foulquie (Madrid, Spain, 236), junior Brent Goik (Bay City, Mich., 239) and freshman Lorne Don (Toronto, Ont., 247) rounded out the Spartan lineup.
Virginia Commonwealth's Erik Knudsen captured medallist honors by four strokes with a 66-70-72=208.
The Birkdale Collegiate Classic is the first tournament of the spring for Michigan State and first-year head coach Mark Hankins. The Spartans return to action March 25-26 in a crucial regional tournament at the Dr. Pepper Intercollegiate in Dallas, Texas.
