EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State's men's golf team shot a first-round 308 on Saturday and stands in a tie for 16th place out of 18 teams at the Birkdale Collegiate Classic in Huntersville, N.C. The Spartans are only eight strokes behind eighth-place Old Dominion (300) in the highly competitive field in which only 12 strokes separate the fourth-place teams from the 18th-place team. Virginia Commonwealth leads the tournament at 286.
Two rounds were scheduled for Saturday at the 7,013-yard, par-72 Birkdale Golf Club, but rain delayed the second round. Play will conclude Sunday.
Junior Dennis Riedel (St. Clair, Mich.) fired a one-over-par 73 in the first round and is tied for 11th individually, just seven strokes behind tournament leader Erik Knudsen of Virginia Commonwealth. Other Spartans under 80 included sophomore Nathan Clark (Mason, Mich.) at 76 and senior Carlos Foulquie (Madrid, Spain) at 79.
The Birkdale Collegiate Classic is the first tournament of the spring for Michigan State and first-year head coach Mark Hankins.
