Michigan Takes Men's Gymnastics Big Ten Championship

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan Wolverines claimed their second straight Men's Gymnastics Big Ten Championship with a score of 232.100. It is the Wolverines 14th Big Ten Team Championship. Ohio State took second with a team score of 229.100, while Illinois placed third with a 228.075. Iowa took fourth (227.750), Michigan State placed fifth (226.100), Penn State was sixth (225.850) and Minnesota placed seventh (222.850).
The top six finishers in the all-around competition made the All-Big Ten Team. Michigan sophomore Scott Vetere won the all-around competition with a score of 58.700. Iowa's Todd Strada took second (57.550), Jamie Natalie of Ohio State took third (57.525), Kevin Roulston of Michigan placed fourth (56.525), Penn State's Adam Benas took fifth (56.450) and Raj Bahvsar of Ohio State finished sixth (56.425). Kris Zimmerman of Michigan was also selected to the team because he finished first on the parallel bars (9.900).
Vetere was the first Wolverine since 1975 to win the Big Ten all-around competition. Vetere also won the pommel horse (9.850) and still rings (9.925).
Ohio State's Jamie Natalie won the floor exercise with a score of 9.900 and the vault with a 9.825. Iowa's Todd Strada won the horizontal bar, scoring a 9.800.
Michigan State took a hard loss to start the night when sophomore David Ruiz suffered a season-ending wrist injury on the first event of the night for the Spartans, the high-bar.
Michigan Head Coach Kurt Golder was impressed with his team's performance, "We had our highest hit percentage of the year, 82%. When we have a hit percentage like that I expect us to win.
"We came out with high enthusiasm and maintained it throughout the night, which was what we needed to do," said Golder.
The Big Ten Men's Gymnastics Championships will conclude tomorrow with the individual finals, the meet will begin at 7 p.m.
