Note Of The Night
MSU In The Big Ten Tourney - Michigan State journeys to Chicago for the third Big Ten Tournament, looking to defend its 1999 Big Ten Tournament Championship. In the inaugural tournament in 1998, the Spartans were upset by Minnesota, 76-73, in the first game of the tournament. In 1999, the Spartans scored victories over Northwestern, 61-59, Wisconsin, 56-41, and Illinois, 67-50, en route to the Big Ten Championship. Mateen Cleaves took home Big Ten Tournament MVP honors.
Three More Notes No Media Person Should Be Without
1. MSU In The United Center - Michigan State owns a 4-2 record in the United Center, including four-straight victories. Outside of the Big Ten Tournament, the Spartans have played at the United Center twice for the Great Eight, losing to Duke, 73-67, in 1998 and defeating Kansas, 66-54, this past December.
2. Three-Peat For Mo Pete - With the win over Michigan, the Spartans grabbed a share of a third-straight Big Ten Championship for Morris Peterson and the rest of the Spartans. This is the first time for Michigan State to win three-straight titles. Only seven schools in Big Ten history have won three consecutive regular season championships for a total of eight different times. (Chicago 1907-10, Wisconsin 1912-14, Purdue 1934-36 and 1994-96, Ohio State 1960-64, Michigan 1964-66, Indiana 1973-76, Michigan State 1998-2000).
3. Coaches Are Smart - Morris Peterson was named Big Ten Player of the Year by the league's coaches. He is joined on the first team by teammate Mateen Cleaves. Cleaves and Peterson were also voted first team All-Big Ten by the media, but Indiana's A.J. Guyton took home MVP honors. Charlie Bell was selected third-team all-conference by the coaches and media.

Coach Izzo - In his fifth year, Tom Izzo is 111-48 (.698), 59-25 (.702) in the Big Ten, as the coach of the Michigan State basketball program. In 1999, Izzo was named national coach of the year by Basketball Times, while earning similar honors from Associated Press, Basketball News and the USBWA in '98. With the win over Indiana on Jan. 11, Izzo became only the fourth Spartan coach to reach the 100-win mark.
Much Too Young To Feel This Old - Although just in his fifth year, Tom Izzo is currently tied for the third-longest coaching tenure in the Big Ten, trailing only Indiana's Bob Knight (entering his 29th season) and Purdue's Gene Keady (20th). Penn State's Jerry Dunn and Wisconsin's Dick Bennett are also in their fifth year.
Izzo vs. Ranked Opponents - Since 1995-96, Tom Izzo has posted a 27-25 record against foes ranked in the AP top 25. This includes wins in 16 of MSU's last 21 games against ranked opponents. Michigan State is 5-4 this year against ranked teams.
Getting Defensive - While the offense attracts a lot of attention, the secret to MSU's success lies on the defensive end of the floor. Through 30 games, Spartan opponents are averaging 59.6 ppg with a field-goal percentage of 39.8 (30.6% from three-point range). MSU ranks 13th in the nation in scoring defense.
Just In Case You Missed It - Here's a look at some of the numbers from Saturday's Michigan game.
*769 - Mateen Cleaves career assists, a Big Ten record.
*114 - MSU point total, a school record for points in a Big Ten game and fourth-most ever.
*51 - MSU margin of victory, a school record for victory margin in a conference game.
*36 - MSU assist total, a school record and tied for the Big Ten record for a conference game.
*32 - MSU 3-point field goals attempted, a school record and tied for the Big Ten record for a conference game.
*31 - Charlie Bell point total, a career high.
*20 - Mateen Cleaves assist total, a Michigan State and Big Ten single-game record, just two shy of the NCAA mark.
*18 - A.J. Granger point total, a career high.
*16 - MSU 3-point field goals made, a school record and tied for the Big Ten record for a conference game.
*6 - MSU turnover total, the fewest by MSU since March 19, 1998 (5).
He's Back - Since his return to the starting lineup 15 games ago, Mateen Cleaves has shown why he is the catalyst for the Spartans. Over the last 15 games, he is averaging a team-high 31.1 minutes, 12.0 points and 8.3 assists. Cleaves' 7.8 assists in conference games leads the Big Ten. He was named Big Ten Co-Player of the Week on Feb. 21.
And He's Playing His Best Ball - Over the last six games, Mateen Cleaves has been back in All-America form. During this stretch he is averaging 14.8 points, 9 assists and 1.8 steals while shooting 50% (29-58) from the floor, 46% from three-point range (10-22).
Mo Cleaves Giveth And Mo Cleaves Taketh Away - Mateen Cleaves now owns the MSU career record for steals (186) and assists (769). Illinois' Bruce Douglas, Michigan's Gary Grant and Northwestern's Patrick Baldwin are the other Big Ten players to own both career records at their respective school.
Lending A Helping Hand - Mateen Cleaves (769 career assists) passed Illinois' Bruce Douglas (765) into first place on the Big Ten career assists chart with his 20-assist performance in the regular-season finale against Michigan. Cleaves passed Michigan's Gary Grant (731) for second place with 10 assists at Penn State.
Mo Pete Loves The Big Ten - Morris Peterson was named the Big Ten Player of the Week for the week ending Feb. 6. This was the second time this year that Peterson was so honored, having also been selected on Jan. 9. Peterson is the only Big Ten player to rank among the top 10 in scoring (5th, 17.2 ppg), rebounding (4th, 7.4 rpg), field-goal percentage (5th, .457) and 3-point field-goal percentage (8th, .373) in conference games. Overall, he is second in the conference in three-point shooting at .411%.
A Special Class - Over the past four years, the current senior class of Steve Cherry, Mateen Cleaves, A.J. Granger and Morris Peterson have played a major role in the resurgence of Michigan State basketball. Their list of accomplishments include three regular-season Big Ten Championships, one Big Ten Tournament Championship, two NCAA Tournament appearances and one trip to the Final Four. This group has a four-year record of 95-32 (.748), the most wins amassed by one senior class in Michigan State history.
Meet The Flintstones - Flint, Mich., natives Charlie Bell, Mateen Cleaves and Morris Peterson have been a three-man wrecking crew over the last six games. The trio is averaging 47.8 points (Bell - 17.8, Peterson - 15.7, Cleaves - 14.8) during that stretch.
Go, Go, Power Granger - Midway through the season, the Spartans experimented with A.J. Granger coming off the bench as a sixth man. Since returning to the starting lineup nine games ago, Granger is averaging 10.3 points and a team-best 7.7 rebounds.
It's All About Boardwork - In the most recent NCAA statistics (Feb. 28), MSU's rebounding margin of 13.7 ranked first in the nation. Michigan State has outrebounded 27 opponents and has only been outrebounded once (by Wisconsin (2/19)). Through 30 games, MSU has a rebound advantage of 1210 (40.3) - 799 (26.6).
In Fact, It's So Much About Boardwork That We Provide More Stats - *In the Spartans' 23 victories, MSU is outrebounding opponents 958-581, an average of 41.7-25.3.
*In the seven losses, the count is 252-210, an average of 36.0-30.0.
*The Spartans have a rebound advantage of 41.3-26.6 in conference games.
*MSU owns a rebounding advantage of 41.7-24.4 at home.
*MSU owns a rebounding advantage of 39.1-28.6 away from East Lansing.
*MSU has held four opponents to 20 or fewer rebounds.
*In Tom Izzo's tenure, MSU has outrebounded 132 of 159 opponents, posting a 100-32 record in those games.
Rebounding All The Way Into The Record Books - Michigan State finished the Big Ten regular season with a rebounding margin of +14.7, smashing the old Big Ten mark of 12.6 set by Iowa in 1987.
Hitting The Offensive Glass - Michigan State leads the Big Ten in offensive rebounds with 14.6 per game, 13.9 in conference games. Andre Hutson (73 off. reb.) and Morris Peterson (67) lead the team, but close behind are freshmen Jason Richardson (49) and Aloysius Anagonye (47).
MSU Rebounds vs. Opponent Points - The Minnesota game marked the fifth time this season the Spartans had more rebounds (45) than their opponent had points (43). The same also happened against Wisconsin (50 reb., 44 pts.), Toledo (45 reb., 33 pts.), Howard (54 reb., 45 pts.) and Northwestern (42 reb., 29 pts.).
No Shame In Sharing - For anyone who would discount MSU's three-straight conference championships because the titles were not won outright, consider the following fact. Only three times in Big Ten Conference history has a team won three-straight outright titles (Wisconsin 1912-14, Ohio State 1960-62 and Purdue 1994-96). Overall, there have been eight three-time champions.
Shooting For 70 - When Michigan State scores 70 points, chances are, it is going to win. The Spartans are 16-2 this season when scoring 70 points or more, with the only losses coming to Texas (81-74) and at Indiana (81-79) in overtime. Conversely, MSU is only 7-5 when failing to reach the 70-point mark.
Fast Starts - Michigan State has outscored its opponents 1149-795 in the first half this season, for an average halftime score of 38.3-26.5. By comparison, the Spartans are outscoring opponents in the second half by a total of only 106 points, an average of 36.0-32.5.
In Good Hands - Turnovers have been a major concern for the Spartans this season as the team is averaging 15.6 per game. Things are improving, however, as MSU has only eight per game in the last two contests. Limiting turnovers is key because over the past four seasons MSU has a 44-7 record when turning the ball over fewer times than its opponent.
Block Party - Junior forward Andre Hutson currently ranks eighth on MSU's career blocked shots list with 57 rejections. In 1998-99, Hutson shared the team lead of 22 blocks with Morris Peterson. He is third this season with 11 rejections.
No Slivers Here - Last year, eight Spartans averaged over fifteen minutes per game with only Mateen Cleaves seeing more than 30 minutes of action. Through 30 games this season, nine players are averaging more than 14.
Moving On Up - Mateen Cleaves and Morris Peterson are currently ranked among the top-10 scorers in MSU history. Peterson (ninth, 1,429 points) and Cleaves (10th, 1,417 points) will now battle each other as Mike Robinson's 1,717 points at eighth place are out of reach. (See page 4 of the MSU Basketball Notes for a complete list.)
To Be The Best, You Have To Play The Best -- Eight of Michigan State's 1999-2000 opponents are ranked in the ESPN/USA Today poll, including Ohio State (5), Arizona (6), Indiana (13), Texas (15), Kentucky (16), Purdue (21), Connecticut (22) and Kansas (24).
Wizards Of Westwood - On Dec. 30, 1999, Mateen Cleaves and Morris Peterson were named to the Mid-Season Top 30 candidates for the All-American Team and John Wooden Award. The list actually includes 33 names as Cleaves, Utah's Hanno Mattola and Stanford's Mark Madsen, who because of injury missed the minimum game requirements, were added to the list of 30 candidates. The list has since been trimmed to 15 finalists with both Cleaves and Peterson still among consideration.
Here's Your Storyline - A Little Something On Every Team
Illinois - Illinois leads the all-time series 45-44. Tom Izzo is 7-3 in his career against the Illini. MSU has won the last four games in the series by an average of 15.25 points. MSU and Illinois met only once in the regular season, with the Spartans taking a 91-66 victory in East Lansing. Michigan State defeated Illinois, 67-50, in the 1999 Big Ten Tournament championship game.
Indiana - Indiana leads the all-time series 56-36. Tom Izzo is 5-3 in his career against the Hoosiers. Michigan State has won four of the last five games in the series. The Spartans and Hoosiers met twice this season, with both games going into overtime. The two contests were nearly mirror images of each other. In both games, the home team trailed by at least five points late in the game before sending the game into overtime on a three-pointer by their league MVP, Morris Peterson and A.J. Guyton, respectively. The two squads have never met in the Big Ten Tournament.
Iowa - Iowa leads the all-time series 49-45. Tom Izzo is 7-1 in his career against the Hawkeyes. Michigan State has won the last six games in the series by an average of 14.2 points. The Spartans and Hawkeyes met only once this season, a early matchup in the first week of the conference season in Iowa City. The Spartans cruised to a 75-53 victory behind 29 points and eight rebounds from Morris Peterson. The two squads have never met in the Big Ten Tournament.
Michigan - Michigan leads the all-time series 88-61. Tom Izzo is 5-5 in his career against the Wolverines. The Spartans have won the last five games in the series by an average of 21 points. Michigan State won both contests this season, taking a 82-62 victory at Ann Arbor and a 114-63 contest on Senior Day in East Lansing. The 51-point margin of victory in the regular-season finale was the largest margin of victory by either team in the series. The two squads have never met in the Big Ten Tournament.
Minnesota - Minnesota leads the all-time series 53-44. Tom Izzo is 6-4 in his career against the Golden Gophers. The Spartans have won the last three contests by an average of 18 points. The two squads met only once this season with MSU taking a 79-43 victory just last Thursday. After the first basket of the second half, the Spartans never led by less than 30 points. The Spartans have won five of the last six games in the series with the only loss being a 76-73 setback in the quarterfinals of the 1998 Big Ten Tournament.
Northwestern - Michigan State leads the all-time series 63-35. Tom Izzo is 8-1 in his career against the Wildcats. The Spartans have won 25 of the last 26 games in the series. In two back-to-back games this season, the Spartans played great defense. In the first meeting, MSU opened the game with a 14-0 run and finished with as many rebounds (45) as Northwestern had points. In game two, MSU held NU to seven field goals, the lowest total by a Spartan opponent since 1951. The Spartans defeated the Wildcats, 61-59, in the quarterfinals of the 1999 Big Ten Tournament.
Ohio State - Michigan State leads the all-time series 51-44. Tom Izzo is 6-1 in his career against the Buckeyes. The Spartans have won 11 of the last 12 games in the series. The two squads split the two games this season, with the home team winning each game by 11 points. In Columbus, Ohio State took a 78-67 victory, while the Spartans won 83-72 in East Lansing. In MSU's victory, the Flintstones (Bell, Cleaves and Peterson) accounted for 73 points as all three scored 20 points or more. The two squads have never met in the Big Ten Tournament.
Penn State - Michigan State leads the all-time series 14-2. Tom Izzo is 7-1 in his career against the Nittany Lions. The Spartans have won nine of the last 10 contests and 10 of 12 since Penn State joined the Big Ten. Michigan State won two games this year, 76-63 in East Lansing and 79-63 in State College. The game in East Lansing was the opener of the Big Ten season and marked the return to the floor for Mateen Cleaves after sitting out the non-conference season with a stress fracture in his right foot. In the contest at Penn State, MSU used a 11-0 run to start the second half and opened up a comfortable 52-35 lead. The two squads have never met in the Big Ten Tournament.
Purdue - Purdue leads the all-time series 57-32. Tom Izzo is 3-5 in his career against the Boilermakers. The Spartans, however, have won three of the last five games in the series. The two teams met only once this season, with Purdue taking a 70-67 victory. The Boilermakers are the only Big Ten team the Spartans have not defeated this season. At one point, MSU led 57-47 before Purdue closed the game with a 23-10 run. The two squads have never met in the Big Ten Tournament.
Wisconsin - Michigan State leads the all-time series 59-47. Tom Izzo is 8-3 in his career against the Badgers. The Spartans have won the last four games in the series by an average of 10.5 points. Michigan State took two games from Wisconsin this season, 61-44 in Madison and 59-54 in East Lansing. In the game at Madison, the Spartans outrebounded the Badgers by a 50-23 margin. In the rematch in East Lansing, the Flintstones combined for 42 of MSU's 59 points. The two squads met in the semifinals of the 1999 Big Ten Tournament with MSU taking a 56-41 victory.
Looking For Some Filler Material? Old Notes That You've Seen Before But Are Worth Repeating
Bouncing Back - MSU has suffered seven losses this season. After all seven losses, the Spartans have answered defeat with a convincing win. In those six games, Michigan State's average margin of victory is 24 points, with the closest game being a 10-point victory over then No. 2-ranked North Carolina, 86-76. The last time that MSU lost consecutive games was Dec. 2 and Dec. 5 of 1998 when the Spartans fell to Duke and Connecticut.
Free Trips To Europe - After arriving at the Breslin Center at 3 am on Sunday morning after the Arizona game, the Spartans concluded a grueling span of the non-conference season that saw them play nine games in 20 days. Round trip distances to game locations included: 4,000 to Puerto Rico, 1,100 to North Carolina, 350 to Chicago and 3,200 to Arizona (Total travel - 8,650 miles).
Travel Woes - On two different occasions this season Michigan State's travel experiences have not gone exactly as planned. After the Jan. 8 game at Iowa, the Spartans sat at the airport and on the plane for one hour waiting for fog to lift. When that never happened, the team spent the night in Cedar Rapids before flying out the next morning. Then on Feb. 19, the Spartans waited at the Madison airport until four in the morning after a deicing truck bumped into the plane, creating a whole series of delays. The team returned to the airport at 10 am only to wait around until 1:30 to depart. The team arrived back in East Lansing at 3:30. Travel problems, however, does not effect the team's play. In both instances, the Spartans won their Tuesday afternoon game after getting back on a Sunday afternoon.
Back Before Color TV - On Jan. 27, Michigan State's defense held Northwestern to seven field goals and 29 total points. To find similar numbers in the record book, it's necessary to go back a half century. The last time MSU held an opponent to only seven field goals was its inaugural year in the Big Ten when Wisconsin won 35-29 on Feb. 24, 1951. The 29 points scored by Northwestern were the fewest ever by a Big Ten opponent. The Spartans last held an opponent under 30 points when they defeated Mississippi State, 74-28, on Dec. 29, 1948.
Stingy On The Glass - After only outrebounding Arizona by three, Michigan State returned to its dominating ways on the glass against Oakland, posting a 33-12 rebound advantage. The 12 rebounds by the Golden Grizzlies were the fewest by a Spartan opponent since December 30, 1989 when Michigan State outrebounded Princeton, 27-11, en route to a 51-49 victory.
Beating The Champs - With Muhammad Ali in the audience, Michigan State defeated defending national champion Connecticut, 85-66, on Feb. 5, in the Breslin Center. The win marked Michigan State's first home victory over a ranked non-conference opponent since MSU beat #20 Notre Dame, 85-82, on Jan. 20, 1970. MSU also improved to 6-11 against defending national champions, including 4-3 at East Lansing where the Spartans have won four-straight games against NCAA champions.
The Breslin Advantage: It's Awesome - MSU has won a school-record 28 consecutive games in the Breslin Center. Under Coach Izzo, the Spartans have amassed a 62-12 home record. Since the facility opened in 1989, MSU has posted a record of 137-27 (.835) (61-7 vs. non-conference opponents and 76-20 vs. conference foes). The 28-game streak is the second-longest current streak in Division I. This year, MSU's average margin of victory at home was 25 points.
An Even 20 - Michigan State recorded its third-consecutive 20-win season for the first time in school history with a 59-54 win over Wisconsin on Feb. 19. In its 101 seasons of playing basketball, MSU has posted 10 20-win records.
