BOCA RATON, Fla. - MSU's losing streak is now at six games following its 4-3 loss to the Fighting Knights of Lynn University on Monday evening at the campus of Lynn University in Boca Raton, Fla. Lynn's record improves to 15-5 following the win.
In a well-pitched game, which saw each squad's starting pitcher go over six innings, the Spartans drew first blood in the third after senior right fielder Mike Pisani's (Rochester, Mich.) RBI single which scored senior infielder Ted Demetral (Sterling Heights, Mich.), putting the Spartans out front 1-0. With his third inning single, Pisani has now hit safely in all of MSU's eight games this season.
The Spartans lead, though, evaporated in the bottom-half of the inning as Lynn went on to score three runs off of Spartan starting pitcher Jon Huizinga (Wayland, Mich.). Huizinga, however, settled down after the third - allowing just one hit in his final three and two-thirds innings worth of work.
Just as difficult on hitters as Huizinga was Fighting Knights starter Brant St. Louis, who lasted six and one-third innings before giving way to the bullpen. But in the seventh inning a tired St. Louis walked the bases loaded and had to relieved by Adam Lopez. One batter is all Lopez faced as Demetral singled up the middle to score MSU's Don Watchowski (So., Shelby Township, Mich.), bringing the score to 3-2. Following Demetral's at bat, Lynn would again go to the bullpen, this time bringing in Roger Kenner to face freshman center fielder Bob Malek. Malek grounded out to second, but drove home junior catcher Rick Court (Grosse Pointe, Mich.), tying the game 3-3.
The Spartans, however, again lost their lead in the bottom half of the inning. After reaching on an infield error, Lynn's Landon Thomas came around to score on a wild pitch. Thomas' run proved to be the difference of the game with Lynn prevailing 4-3.
The Spartans will have the day off tomorrow, but will be back in action Wednesday night when they will take on the defending National Champion University of Miami Hurricanes at 7:00 p.m. in Coral Gables, Fla.
