EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State baseball team improved its season mark to 7-16 on the year following a 8-3 victory over the Warriors of Indiana Tech on Saturday afternoon at Kobs Field on the MSU campus. With the loss, Indiana Tech falls to 10-8 on the season.
Leading the way for the Spartans was junior designated hitter Rick Court (Grosse Point, Mich.) and senior pitcher Scott Brandell (Lansing, Mich.). Court registered three hits, scored three runs and stole two bases on the afternoon to fuel the Spartans offense. En route to his first win of the season Brandell struck out seven and allowed just three runs in his seven and two-third's innings worth of work.
In the game's opening inning the Warriors jumped out to a 1-0 lead off the strength of two hits and a Spartan error. Indiana Tech's lead, however, would be shortlived as the Spartans countered for one run in the second and two in the third to take the lead for good. During this stretch freshman outfielder Bob Malek (Canton, Mich.) hit a inside the park homerun which gave MSU a 3-2 lead. The homerun was Malek's third on the year. The Spartans added one run in each of the fourth and sixth innings before adding three more in the seventh.
MSU will once again be back in action against Indiana Tech on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Kobs Field.
