Evanston, Ill. - The Northwestern Wildcats swept two games from the Michigan State baseball team Easter Sunday, winning three of four games in the series. The Spartans fall to 14-26 (4-11 Big Ten) on the season, while the Wildcats improve to 22-18 (7-9).
In game one, MSU scored two runs in the third to take a 2-1 lead. Bob Malek (Fr., Canton, Mich.) hit a two-run double, knocking in Charlie Braun (Fr., Grosse Pointe, Mich.) and Mike Pisani (Sr., Rochester, Mich.) for his team-leading 38th and 39th RBI on the year.
The one-run advantage would be shortlived, however, as the Wildcats came back to score two runs in its half of the inning to reclaim the lead for good. NU also scored two runs in the fourth and sixth innings to win by the final score of 7-2.
Scott Brandell (Jr., DeWitt, Mich.) started on the mound for MSU, throwing 2 1/3 innings in the loss. His record now falls to 1-7 on the season.
Game two was a heartbreaker for the Spartans. After tying the game in the top of the seventh at four runs apiece, Northwestern second baseman J.P. Williamson hit a game-winning RBI to centerfield to end the game in the final inning.
Pisani went 2-for-4 in the contest, hitting his second homerun of the season in the first inning. Malek went 1-for-3 with two RBI, including the RBI that tied the game in the top of the seventh.
Michigan State returns to action Wednesday, April 26, at Oldsmobile Park in Lansing, Mich., to face the Chippewas of Central Michigan. MSU defeated CMU earlier in the season, 6-2.
