Lansing, Mich. - Michigan State University's baseball squad fell to 14-29 (4-12 Big Ten) on the season following Friday night's 10-5 loss to Minnesota at Oldsmobile Park. With the win Minnesota improves its record to 28-16 on the season and remains atop the Big Ten standings with a mark of 13-4.
MSU opened up the game's scoring by putting up two runs in its half of the first inning following a two-run homer by freshman centerfielder Bob Malek (Canton, Mich.), his seventh such hit on the season. Malek's blast drove in senior rightfielder Mike Pisani (Rochester, Mich.).
Following two more scoreless innings pitched by Spartan starter Josh Axelson (Brooklyn, Mich.), who finished the game with six strikeouts, the Spartans added another run in the third inning to increase their lead to 3-0. Freshman leftfielder Brett Wattles (Rochester, Mich.) came around to score after Malek singled into leftfield.
Minnesota, however, would come back. After scoring a run in the fourth inning and being held scoreless in the fifth inning, the Golden Gophers exploded for seven runs in the sixth inning, which gave them a commanding 8-3 lead. Minnesota pounded out six hits in its decisive sixth inning.
Following the sixth inning, the Spartans came back and scored a run in each of the sixth and eighth innings, while the Gophers added two more runs in their half of the eighth.
Michigan State will take on the Gophers again tomorrow in a doubleheader at Oldsmobile Park in Lansing, Mich. The doubleheader is slated to begin at 4:00 p.m.
