Lansing, Mich. - The University of Minnesota's baseball squad continued its stay atop the Big Ten standings following its doubleheader sweep of MSU on Saturday at Oldsmobile park. The Gophers took game one 16-2 and won the second game 7-5 to improve their overall record to 30-16 and conference record to 15-4. Following the two losses the Spartans fell to 14-31 on the year and 4-14 in Big Ten play.
In the first game the Gophers scored in each of the first four innings, including a seven run third inning, and outhit the Spartans 14-2 in the afternoon. The Spartans never got things on track as they committed four errors and used three different pitchers in the game. The Spartans did get on the board in the third inning as freshman catcher Brady Burrill (Newhall, Calif.) came around to score. MSU would get an additional run in the fifth inning when sophomore first baseman Kyle Geswein (Dayton, Ohio) scored for the Spartans.
In game two Minnesota once again got strong pitching and timely hitting. The Gophers, clinging to just a 1-0 lead after four innings of play, put up four runs in the fifth inning to increase the lead to 5-0. The Spartans, however, would come back. Down 7-1 in the bottom of the seventh, MSU pulled to within 7-5 following sophomore outfielder Chris McCuiston's (Birmingham, Mich.) two run homer, his third on the season, which scored freshman outfielder Brett Wattles (Rochester, Mich.). McCuiston's blast would be the last bright spot for the Spartans on the night as senior second baseman Ted Demetral (Sterling Heights, Mich.) grounded out to third base to end the game.
Michigan State will conclude its series with Minnesota on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at Olds Park.
