East Lansing, Mich. - In a wild and wacky weekend series due to snow and bad weather, Penn State University and MSU continued a game from Friday and made up a Saturday doubleheader on Sunday at Kobs Field. Penn State claimed Friday's carried over game 19-4 and also won the first game of the doubleheader 7-4. MSU, however, salvaged the final game 2-1 to improve to 9-19 (2-5 Big Ten) on the season. Penn State moves to 24-9 (7-4 Big Ten) on the year following Sunday's contests.
Lost in the shuffle of all the snow and baseball played on Sunday was senior outfielder Mike Pisani (Rochester, Mich.), who went a combined five-for-nine over the three game set. Pisani's biggest hit, though, came in the first inning of the third and final game, a double into right-centerfield. That double was Pisani's 48th career double, which is now a school record as it broke the old mark of 47 hit by Scott Ayotte (1992-95).
GAME RECAPS:
MSU 2 - PSU 1 (Game Three)
MSU starting pitcher Gary Zsigo (Sr., Lennon, Mich.) pitched a seven inning complete game, allowing just eight hits while striking out five en route to his first win on the season. Not only did Zsigo pitch well, he went two-for-two at the plate and scored two runs, including the winning run in the bottom of the seventh and final inning off a sacrifice fly from Rick Court (Jr., Grosse Point, Mich.).
Penn State opened the game's scoring in the third inning by scoring a run to take a 1-0 lead. MSU countered in the fifth as Zsigo came around to score scored following his double into right-centerfield.
As noted earlier, Mike Pisani (Sr., Rochester, Mich.) became the school's all-time career doubles leader after he hit his 48th career double in the first inning.
PSU 7 - MSU 4 (Game Two)
MSU dropped its 19th game of the year in dramatic fashion as the Nittany Lions came back from a 4-3 deficit to win 7-4 in extra innings.
In the game's beginning both teams came out offensive as Penn State opened the game with two runs, while MSU countered with three runs in its half of the first inning as Spartans Ted Demetral (Sr., Sterling Heights, Mich.), Mike Pisani (Sr., Rochester, Mich.) and Bob Malek (Fr., Canton, Mich.) all came around to score.
The Nittany Lions then tied the game up at three in fourth inning by scoring a run off of Spartan starter Scott Brandell (Sr., Lansing, Mich.). The Spartans, however, would reclaim the lead in the fifth inning following a RBI single by Malek which drove in Pisani, who earlier tripled in the inning. MSU's lead, though, would be short lived as Penn State came back to score a run in the seventh inning to push the game into extra innings, which the Nittany Lions ultimately won off the strength of three runs in the game's extra frame.
PSU 19 - MSU - 4 (Game One)
In a continuation of Friday's suspended game, which Penn State was leading 5-0 in the top of the third when play was suspended, the Nittany Lions erupted for 19 runs on 21 hits en route to an easy 19-4 victory.
Leading the way for Penn State was leadoff hitter Michael Campo, who had four hits, six RBI and three stolen bases to go along with a grand slam homerun.
