Kalamazoo, Mich. - Western Michigan pounded out 11 hits en route to an 11-5 victory over the Michigan State baseball team on Thursday afternoon at Hyames Field on the WMU campus. MSU falls to 18-34 on the season, while the Broncos improve to 25-24.
The Spartans jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first. After a Ted Demetral (Sr., Sterling Heights, Mich.) double and a walk by Mike Pisani (Sr., Rochester, Mich.), Bob Malek (Fr., Canton, Mich.) crushed a three-run homer over the centerfield fence. The home run was Malek's ninth on the year.
Western Michigan responded with two runs of its own in the first, closing the gap to 3-2.
After being shut down the following two innings by MSU starter Ryan Golem (Fr., Dearborn, Mich.), WMU's offensive attack sparked for four runs in the fourth. Michigan State came back with two runs in the fifth on a two-run single by Malek which brought home Brett Wattles (Fr., Rochester, Mich.) and Demetral. Malek finished the game 2-for-3 with five RBI, and his 55 RBI on the season is good for fifth best in a single MSU season.
The Spartans would not come any closer to WMU, as the Broncos scored one run in the fifth followed by four more runs in the seventh.
Golem (2-3) took the loss for MSU, giving up seven runs and scattering six hits in his four innings of work. Andy Spencer (2-0) picked up the victory for Western.
Michigan State closes out its season with a four-game series this weekend at Ohio State. Game one between MSU and OSU is tomorrow at 6:35 p.m. at Bill Davis Stadium in Columbus.
