Crew Finishes Second At Central Region Sprints

Oak Ridge, Tenn. - The ninth-ranked Michigan State crew finished second at the Central Region Sprints held this weekend at Melton Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn. The Spartans, who totaled 54 points, were runner-up to Big Ten rival Michigan, which topped the 14-team field with 79 points. MSU advanced its top four boats to the grand finals, garnering second, third and two fourth-place finishes.
"It was a good weekend of racing," Spartan coach Bebe Bryans said. "We went down there to win, but I still feel good with our performance because it was a strong second place finish. Overall, I felt it was a much stronger team performance than last year."
The varsity eight finished second to the Wolverines in Sunday's grand final with a time of 6:38.3. MSU advanced to the grand final after winning its heat (6:53.9) and a semifinal (6:28.2) race on Saturday.
The second varsity eight took home third place honors after posting a time of 6:48.5 in the grand final. The Spartans also placed third in their heat (7:17.7) and in the semifinals (6:46.8).
The first varsity four placed fourth in the grand final with a time of 7:40.2. After finishing third in its heat (8:08.4) on Saturday, the Spartans won the second repechage (7:12.7) to advance to the grand finals.
The second varsity four also took home fourth place in the grand final, posting a time of 7:57.7.
In novice competition, the first novice eight finished third in the petite final with a time of 7:13.3, while the second novice eight placed third in the grand final with a time of 7:29.4.
The Spartans will find out on Tuesday, May 16 if they will be among the 10 teams selected for the NCAA Championship. The championship will be held May 26-28 at Cooper River Park in Camden County, N.J. Last year, the Spartans finished eighth at the NCAA Championship in just their second varsity season.
