East Lansing, Mich. - The Michigan State women's crew has earned a bid to the 2000 NCAA Championship to be held in Camden, N.J., May 26-28. It marks the second straight year that the Spartans have earned a team bid to the championship.
"It's exciting to make it to the NCAA Championship for a second straight season," assistant coach Matt Weise said. "Our rowers established a goal of placing in the top six in the nation this year so this gets us one step closer. Last year our goal was just to get there, but this year they have a purpose and are ready to face the challenge of competing against the top teams in the country."
MSU is one of three Big Ten schools selected to the 10-team championship that will be held at Cooper River Park. Nine other schools also earned at-large bids for their varsity eight boats.
Last year, the Spartans finished eighth at the NCAA Championship, becoming just the second school to qualify as a team in its second year as a varsity sport. In 1998, MSU qualified its varsity eight boat to the championship and finished ninth.
