East Lansing, Mich. - The Michigan State women's cross country team has earned All-Academic honors from the Women's Cross Country Coaches Association, and two individual runners, Leah Nilsson (Sr., Williamston, Mich.) and Ann Somerville (So., Ironwood, Mich.) have been named to the Academic All-America team.
The Spartans were recognized for their 3.42 team grade-point average, which was 14th in the nation. To earn academic All-America honors, a team must have a 3.25 cumulative grade point average. It is the fourth time women's cross country has been recognized as an academic All-America team.
Nilsson and Somerville are only the third and fourth runners to earn academic All-American honors for women's cross country at Michigan State. To earn individual honors, a runner must carry a cumulative 3.25 GPA and must finish in the top 10% of their NCAA Regional Championship or earn All-America. Nilsson graduated in May with a 3.98 GPA in packaging, while Somerville has a 3.77 GPA in kineslology.
